Endocronartium harknessii
A bright yellowish fungus covering a scar on a 6 in. dia. pine tree.
Spotted in a forest with open meadows.
This pine tree had gone through a traumatic event some time in the past, but is able to keep living.

Your welcome, Brian38....
Thanks maplemoth662.
Two, beautiful photos....
Thank you Machi and Mark for your info. I'm 99% sure this is ponderosa pine to answer your question Machi.
Good call Machi. Some pics of Endocronartium harknessii even show those little white fibrous shards. http://www.wisconsinmushrooms.com/Endocr...
Any photos of the pine needles or the rest of the tree? It might help to know the species of pine.
Rust fungus. Maybe a Cronartium sp. or Endocronartium sp.
