Sciurus vulgaris
The Eurasian red squirrel has a coat which varies in colour with time of year and location. This alpine Swiss individual showed a beautiful red coat with noticeable ear brushes. Spotted high in the trees while feeding on pine cones.
Spotted in a mixed coniferous forest (alt. 1800 m ASL). European larch and cembra pine can be seen in the shot.
The red squirrel is protected in most of Europe, and is threatened by the introduced American eastern grey squirrel
