Physalis peruviana
The Cape Gooseberry (also called Peruvian Groundcherry) is native to South America but has been introduced in various places globally. The fruits of these form in a lantern of leaves and are actually not gooseberries, but relatives to the tomatillo. When unripe, they are toxic, but when ripe, they can be eaten, dried, etc. like most other fruits.
Spotted in a deep wet bed of very loose mulch in Arkansas. The season had been rainy, but the large patch of plants was present the year before, as well.
I'm glad that was the camera's bad quality and my hand wasn't actually that red!
