Spiny Ant

Polyrachis sp.

Description:

A mostly black ant about 8 mm long. The attractive features about this ant were its bronze- gold abdomen, a slim thorax with spines pointing both forward and backward and a slightly broad head with a granular appearance. Legs were brown. Antennae were moderately long with pale tips.

Habitat:

Spotted running up and down a young eucalytpus tree in a reserve.

Notes:

Formicine ants are old world ants with over 600 species. Their nesting types are wide ranging - soil-based, terrestrial or arboreal and they use a variety of materials.
Formicine ants do not sting but spray formic acid when attacking.
