Black Swallowtail

Papilio polyxenes

Description:

Large Swallowtail with black wings with orange, blue, and yellow tan markings. Males have a two bands of yellow tan markings near edge of wings. Black Swallowtail is one of our common swallowtails and adults nectar on a wide variety of plant species. Larvae feed exclusively on members of the Parsley family.

Habitat:

Meadows, fields, woodland edges, and gardens

Notes:

Observed feeding on Verbena bonariensis in gardens at Lantern Court, The Holden Arboretum, Lake County, Kirtland, OH
