Great Golden Digger Wasp

Sphex ichneumoneus

Description:

Large black and orange wasp with dark wings. Wings had a slight bluish iridescence. Very active feeding on the Oregano flowers. Would vibrate wings as it moved around from flower to flower.

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden.

Notes:

This is one of the largest wasps of this type that I have ever seen. There were several of them on the flowers feeding.
