American Coot

Fulica americana

Description:

A black "duck" with red irises, a white bill tipped in black, and a little white in the tailfeather.

Habitat:

Marshes and lakes. This one's at a large suburban lake encircled by a running path. Boats and water-scooters frequent the lake. This day was drab and overcast making the water particularly rocky but there were few people.

Notes:

The grey sky makes the water look grey, giving the photo a "black and white" feel that I love! I learned these aren't actually ducks, though they spend a lot of time on the water.
