Description:

Butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. Very variable. The wingspan is 50-62 mm. The male has the anverse in dark brown colour with a yellowish band. Two ocella in the forewing, one big and one small. The reverse of the hindwing is iridescent dark grey and bluff with a white band outlined by a black line. The butterflies fly from June to September. The caterpillar is light brown with a dorsal dark line very visible and other lateral lines dark brown. The larvae feed on various types of grass. It is also known as Hipparchia alcyone
