Archilochus alexandri
I initially believed this spotting to be an Anna's Hummingbird, but with comment from others, and further research, I have updated this spotting to be a Black-chinned Hummingbird. The coloring and configuration of the tail with white tips on the outer feathers is more indicative of Black-chinned.
This one was spotted in the Mojave Desert...Palm Desert, CA. I have as well seen them in the Mojave Desert in NV, and in the Sonoran Desert in AZ.

Ashley's and Karen's observations got me on track...thanks all!
Glad to be of some help! And they are certainly beautiful shots :)
White spot behind eye - most likely black chinned. Your other possibility is Costa's
Wow, great actions shot, James!
Beautiful series James, congrats and thanks for sharing
Ashley...I appreciate your input. I am doing some more checking based upon your observations. Thanks again!
I can't bring any expertise on the ID James, but just saying these are incredibly beautiful shots.
Tail doesn't match an Anna's. If they have white tips, it's only on the last two feathers. Does look like a female black-chinned, at least based on the tail. I'm definitely no expert on female hummingbirds http://hollandwest.com/?p=197
