Coastal Great Horned Owl

Bubo virginianus

Description:

Large Owl approximately 20 inches in height. Greyish brown with barred chest and large ear tufts.

Habitat:

Mixed Spruce and Alder forest near Edgerton Highway between small meltwater lakes.

Notes:

Spotted this owl sitting on a spruce snag in the rain on our way into Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Three hours later, it was still sitting in the rain.
