Jumping Spider

Phidippus sp.

Description:

A hairy brown, cream, and gray Salticid (jumping spider) seen on tall grasses after my husband mowed nearby. This spider belongs to the Phidippus genus. It has orange to brown markings above four pairs of eyes, cream-colored chelicerae, striped legs, and interesting dark brown and white markings on abdomen. Salticidae is the largest spider family, accounting for nearly 15 percent of all spider species. In terms of arthropods, Salticids are revered for having some of the best vision. Jumping spiders, as the name implies, are also excellent jumpers--and are able to navigate gaps and long distances via this skill.

Habitat:

Tall grass in full sun. Nearby hurricane lilies and hardwood trees.

Notes:

It really liked following me around (and kept several eyes on me) as I photographed it. This has to be the cutest creature I have photographed as of late!
