Spittle Bug

Prosapia sp.

Description:

This black Spittle Bug is about 8 mm in length with 2 orange bands across the elytra and and an orange "V" shaped coloring along the upper inner side of the elytra. The elytra and thorax have a texture which makes it look sparkly. It looks like the 2-Lined Spittle bug (https://texasinsects.tamu.edu/two-lined-...) but differs in lacking the horizontal band across the pronotum and in lacking an orange scutellum. It also differs from a similar species collected in the same vicinity in 2016 (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/125...) which also differs from the 2-lined Spittlebug in lacking an orange scutellum. Unless the 2-lined Spittle Bug is extremely variable phenotypically. Family Cercopidae.

Habitat:

Found on roadside bushes, Km. 16, Highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico.
