Nest of the Rufous Hummingbird

nest of Selasphorus rufus

Description:

This beautiful nest was about 2 inches across and made of lichen, cobweb, tent caterpillar webs, and ? 2 rufous hummingbirds had fledged from this nest a couple days before I arrived at this place. See other spotting.

Notes:

I couldn't believe the exposed site of this nest! I have often looked for hummer nests around my bush and even though I have seen the adults go into an area, have never found their nest. This one was at the end of a branch and in view of many passing people. Incredible!

Thanks! It was very compact and beautifully constructed. There were many tent caterpillar nests on the surrounding forests and the nest contained some of that web material too.

Sorry, this is the "other" spotting I mean. The photos in it are not mine, but belong to my friend.
