Merlin

Falco columbarius

Description:

Very similar to American Kestrel in size, but note lack of bold facial markings, plus *streaked* breast, and banded tail.

Habitat:

Sitting in tree in relatively urbanized residential neighborhood. Surrounding native landscape is mostly "disturbed" shortgrass prairie with yucca, sunflower, prickly-pear cacti, scattered elm trees.

Notes:

Our neighborhood seems to be good for at least one Merlin each year, but they seem to be "just passing through."
