Broad-winged Hawk

Buteo platypterus

Description:

Broad-wingeds are small buteo hawks with a body length of between 35 to 45 cm (13 to 18 in); wingspan is 80 to 100 cm (32 to 40 in). Adults have dark brown upper parts and evenly spaced black and white bands on the tail. Females are larger than males.

Habitat:

Forested areas.

We've been visited several times by this hawk since I first photographed it about two weeks ago. He/she has a particular branch from which to hunt. We haven't seen it capture anything yet, but it looks well-fed so must be a successful hunter.
