Unknown spotting

Description:

10 inches across; The stem is blackened and burnt looking (picture 2); It looks as if someone has been tearing bits off (picture 3) exposing the white inside. Pores on underside (picture 1)

Habitat:

Growing from the end of a cut log (elm?) that lies on the ground, shaded by a large pine. This end faces away from the woodpile receiving a fair amount of indirect light (under the circumstances).

Notes:

First picture is the underside Fourth Picture is 6 days later (Aug 12, 2012) Fifth & Sixth pictures are 9 days after that (Aug 21, 2012)

I've added 3 more pictures showing the mushroom's decline. Still not sure what it is. I'm not even sure what shape it really had due to the torn (?) edges.
