Great find and I would agree with Brian Parsons. It is probably a Midland Painted Turtle which is only a subspecies of Painted Turtle.
The common painted turtle in Ohio area is the MIdland Painted Turtle and I suspect the same is true for you in MI. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/species_...
