About 1" long. To the naked eye, it looked like holes in the wing. Fascinating design. Beautiful eyes.

Either E. ocelleus or E. californicalis. There are subtle differences and the differences appear to me to have an overlap. Maybe someone else could help you further here, or you could submit it to BAMONA or BugGuide:
