Gambel's Quail

Callipepla gambelii

Description:

Similar to the California Quail. The ranges of these two quails do not overlap. The male has more chestnut color on the top of the head and has only a faint scaling pattern on the belly with a large dark patch in center. Gray neck and back, chestnut patch on flanks that have white dashes. Tail is short and squared and wings are broad and short. Females are thinner will have less markings especially on the head. Both will have a top knot but smaller on females.

Habitat:

Found in riparian area and dry areas of the wetlands.
