Surf scoter

Melanitta perspicillata

Description:

This sea duck was not an easy target at all..He clearly saw my intentions from the distance and the moment he saw me approaching the shoreline he zipped lined (swimming) into deeper waters..Smart duck! This is a male. Adult males are all black, except for white patches on the nape and forehead. They also have a bulbous red, yellow and white bill. The females are brown with pale head patches. I did not see any other in the area at that moment. It was a lucky spotting for me!

Habitat:

San Carlos Beach, Monterey, CA.

Yes! I miss seeing all these Northern ducks and also the eiders as I used to in the winter in Massachusetts. Now I have to travel farther North in Europe to see them. It was a little gift for me to see this one :-)
