A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
On a small finca outside the City of Comitan are many tall thin pine trees. Many are full from top to bottom with holes, most stuffed with acorns. We could see and hear the woodpeckers which were clearly redheaded, but very high in the trees for detailed identification. I am not sure which species it was. The acorns are surprisingly difficult to remove, which I found surprising. How do they get them in the holes so tightly?
Open woodland with scattered houses and gardens.
Thank you Hema! I will definitely look for you if I am ever get to be in my old stomping grounds again!
nice spot. i like the last pic! BTW,since you have lived in Concord,Please visit me ,next time you are here!
Hi, Hema. I am not sure which red headed woodpecker it was. There are several for Chiapas and it was too long ago now to trust my memory. I am still waiting for my friend that lives there to get a picture of them. Hope she´ll get it soon.
Thank you Marta, Daniele, venusflytrap, Lenny, Max and Jellis. I am waiting to get a confirmation picture from my friend who lives on the property with the acorn stached trees. I am hoping she can get one with the bird drilling.
Yes I believe those are Acorn Woodpecker holes. Do you have images the Red-headed Woodpeckers doing this? I know they store in cracks and crevices but not drill holes for them.
Wow Lauren.
I thought only Acorn Woodpecker did this
