Saw Palmetto

Description:

This small palm has a sprawling trunk and grows in clumps or dense thickets in sandy coastal lands or as undergrowth in pine woods or hardwood hammocks. Erect stems or trunks are rarely produced but are found in some populations. These are likely very old ones, and saw palmettos are suspected of living up to thousands of years. These are called arborescent palmettos because they look like trees.

Habitat:

Pine flatwoods where they have periodic control burns at Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park
