Ground beetle

Akis granulifera

Description:

Black color, with big head and a characteristic cervical shield as armor. The abdomen is globular, with five longitudinal ridges. These beetles can not fly and have become great walkers, leaning on their sturdy limbs. Easily exceeds 2cm in size.

Habitat:

Dry roadside.

Excellent guess, Emilie. But I think it is Granulifera. If you look at the body you might see the differences. In my eyes ilonka is too "round" and the shield is more "spiky" in this spotting and Granulifera.

I don't think that's quite a match Ashish - the elytra have those really interesting ridges, and the pronotum is even more extravagantly shaped than the one you suggest.
