Olive-backed Sunbird ♂

Cinnyris jugularis

Description:

The Olive-backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis, 12cm) (Nectariniidae), also known as the Yellow-bellied Sunbird, is a very small Old World passerine bird which feeds largely on nectar, although it will also take insects, especially when feeding young. It can take nectar by hovering, but usually perches to feed most of the time. The olive-backed sunbird is common across southern China to the Philippines and Malaysia down to northeast Australia. Originally from mangrove habitat, it has adapted well to humans, and is now common even in fairly densely populated areas, even forming its nests in human dwellings. The underparts of both male and female are bright yellow, the backs are a dull brown color. The forehead, throat and upper breast of the adult male is a dark, metallic blue-black. In the Philippines, the males of some subspecies have an orange band on the chest. (Wikipedia)

Habitat:

Backyard.

Notes:

Current IUCN Red List category: Least Concern, http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/species..., http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22717.... Small songbird, with common names including Tamsi in the Philippines and Kelicap in Malaysia.
