four winged gall

Apiomorpha munita

Description:

The female bug causes gall growth with a distinctive four pointed structure that becomes her home/prison. About 20 were found on this tree. Smaller structures are male galls, often growing from the female gall. A dissection reveals a white neotenic insect with no eyes, no antennae, no legs and no wings.

Thanks asergio. This clever bug is one of very few insects that survive our cold winters and live for two years.
