i was leaning toward chekered keelback too.
Yes, it was caught and released with the help of Irulas. Their knowledge of snakes is superb!

What an interesting spot - it looks like this snake has bitten off more than it can chew! Nature can be cruel, but the snake has to eat & this spotting is very educational.
