A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Gophpherus polyphemus
Came upon this over turned Gopher Tortoise during a bird survey. It tucked into its shell upon hearing our footsteps. It was turned back right side; and subsequent to our leaving it a few moments, it took off for better ground.
Open pasture land. One side is oak trees; and the other is additional pasture area of an old citrus field. All is sandy soil and dotted w/ numerous burrows. The area is known for its Gopher Tortoise population. The pasture land is part of a County Nature Preserve.

Removed from 'Signs of wildlife' mission as this is actual wildlife.
That was good of you to help that tortoise. I wonder how it ended up that way.
