Whimbrel

Numenius phaeopus

Description:

Similar to a curlew but smaller and with distinctive head pattern consisting two dark lateral stripes over an otherwise pale crown.

Habitat:

Found coasts - this one was spotted on a tidal flat at low tide.

Notes:

Not the best shot as he was quite far away, but for me this is only the second whimbrel I've ever seen, and I didn't expect them to be around in the summer.

New photos added, clearer shots. Same bird, same place, different day. :)
