Great crested grebe

Podiceps cristatus

Description:

Looks black and white at a distance; close view reveals grey-brown upperparts. In breeding season has orange-buff ruff, white cheeks and a black cap and crest; plumage less oramental at other time. Bill dagger-like and pink.

Habitat:

Nests on floating moud of vegetation. Found on lakes in breeding season; in winter also around coasts. Dives in search of fish. Local in summer but widespread in winter.

Notes:

Spotted in the Rio Formosa Natural Park. Mostly hiding amongst coots, but I managed to get a few shots of it on its own.
