California Condor

Gymnogyps californianus

Description:

Black California Condor taking a swim on a hot day

Habitat:

Spotted at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Native to Southern California, Arizona, and Utah.

Notes:

These birds have made a huge comeback after their near extinction around 1987. By taking in the 22 condors left in the wild and breeding them at parks such as the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, they have been able to push their numbers past 400 and return to the wild.
