Black-tailed Gnatcatcher

Polioptila melanura

Description:

Very similar to the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. During the summer months the males will have a dark cap. But both the winter and females would be hard to tell apart. The Black-tailed and Blue-gray are both the same coloring except that the Black-tailed would have black under the tail with white outer feathers, and the Blue-gray would have mostly white under the tail. When I spotted this, it was in a group of 4 or 5 others. They were giving a hissing sound like a snake as they moved from bush to bush.

Habitat:

These seemed the like the riparian area of mixed shrub and trees.

Neat! There are a lot of Gildeds in Phoenix. Maybebyou could visit sometime. I have seen a lot of Common Ground Doves in Brawley, CA.

I only missed two birds. The Common Ground Dove and the Gilded Flicker. Hadn't seen any recent reports of the the Gilded but the Dove had been seen. But there were so many Mourning Doves I just couldn't find that one. Yes I would recommend the West Wetlands to anyone going to Yuma.
