American Wigeon

Anas americana

Description:

Leucistic individual. Can still see the black tip to the bill and the white forehead typical of this species. Was also hanging out with lots of normal American wigeons and was the same size and shape.

Habitat:

At the park in town.

Thanks! I don't know off the top of my head, but saw over 120 species in 2014 alone. So my herp life list is probably between 150 and 175!

You are extremely sharp with IDs. May I ask how many herps you have seen?

Me either! I've only seen leucism in geese as far as waterfowl go. I was scanning the pond and saw this small, white duck from far away and didn't recognize it so had to get closer. He had his head tucked most of the time I was watching him so didn't get tons of photos ops. Then took some photos of wood ducks and went to find this guy again to try and get better photos and he had just disappeared! At least the bill is similar to wigeons and the white forehead is pretty distinct or else I may not have known what it was!

Interesting! I didn't know that it happened to wigeons.
