Tringa semipalmata

Description:

Medium-Large sized sandpiper species. Mostly dull gray/brown all over. In flight, front and back of wings appear black with a white area in between.

Habitat:

Coast & shorelines with nearby beaches & marshlands.

Notes:

Saw many of these sandpipers along the coast on Assateague Island, Virginia. These photos were taken with a Canon EF100-400 f/4-f/5.6 lens mounted on a Canon Rebel T2i.

They are much faster in the air than you'd expect from watching them on the ground with the almost awkwardly long legs! The first one in this series was my favorite flight photo of my 3-day trip to Chincoteague... I just wish I could have not cut out the very tip of the wing, but I'll take it :)
