the "pod" was approximately 2 inches long. the insect never crawled completely out of it. what you see in the picture is about as much of it as I saw. This was actually in my garden and I wasn't sure if it would do harm to my plants so I carefully removed it so I could relocate it. The insect hid completely inside the casing which is shown in the 2nd photo.

Can you give us some idea of the sizes of this object and the insect inside it?
What did the insect look like when it came out? If it did.
