I am unsure whether this was a venomous two-colored coral snake or a harmless mimic. Needless to say, In my confusion I did not grab it.

Check out Urotheca euryzona. I spotted a snake in Panama that looks a lot like yours. Like you, I also wasn't grabbing it, but I had a local with me who knew herps and he quickly identified it.
