Fall Cankerworm

Alsophila pometaria

Description:

Small, green with yellowish stripes along the length of the body. This species has "an extra pair of half-sized prolegs on A5" (Wagner p. 144). They are partially visible in my images. Often called "inchworms", Geometrid Moth caterpillars have a unique body shape that causes them to move by bringing their hind ends forward forming a loop or arch with their bodies and then extending their front ends ahead.

Habitat:

Greenhouse in a botanical garden.

Notes:

Found walking along the edge of a leaf in one of the greenhouses. Number 100 posting. :)

Haha! Wilsons, can you believe I had never heard this song until a year or two ago when I was watching our collection of The Muppet Show!
