Flat Footed Fly

Description:

A female Flat Footed Fly, 4 mm in length. Note the expanded tarsal segments on the hind leg (hence the common name). This one has yellow markings on the abdomen and the base of the thorax. Family Platypezidae. The larvae of these flies are usually found in fungi in damp woodland areas.

Habitat:

Garden lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, 2,200 meters.
