Daldinia concentrica

Description:

I think these might have been Cramp balls (Daldinia concentrica) but they seem smaller than usual and also browner (perhaps these are young and turn black when they're older?). There are a few different species that look similar to D. concentrica but are smaller so I'm unsure. Hypoxylon fragiforme for example
