Spicebush Swallowtail

Description:

Iridescent blue patches on dorsal view. The underside of the hind wing has orange median & submarginal spots.

Habitat:

Often found in forests..this butterfly visits these flowers in my garden daily. Western NC mountain forest: Transylvania County

Notes:

Larval food: usually either spicebush (Lindera benzoin) or sassafras (Sassafras albidum)

Lovely series Claire! This is actually a Spicebush swallowtail, one of several species of butterfly that mimics the poisonous pipevine swallowtail to gain some protection against predation. The black swallowtail, the black morph of the eastern Tiger, & the red-spotted purple have also evolved this mimicry!
