Neophoca cinerea
Australian sea lions share distinct features with other sea lions. These include short fur, short flippers and a bulky body.
Spotted at Seal Island WA (Australia) during a kayak excursion, this small island is only inhabited by males; During breeding season many die due the long journey to the islands inhabited by females, being prey by sharks or due exhaustion. Australian sea lions is an Australian endemic species that live on sand beaches and smooth rocks on island offshore of the Australian Cost; Distributed through Houtman Arbrolhos Islands in Western Australia and The Pages Islands in Southern Australia.
As appreciated in the pics two of them went to water to play and followed our kayak jumping and playing nearby. Australian sea lions have recently been listed as threatened and vulnerable and just about 14,730 remain. Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Suborder: Pinnipedia Family: Otariidae Subfamily: Otariinae Genus: Neophoca Species: N. cinerea
