Caterpillar

Description:

Tiny...hardly half an inch long. Looks chiton-like. Some are green. Others are dark. Ants are tending to them...look too large to be aphids though.

Habitat:

For the last couple of weeks I had noticed that the whorl of new leaves of the potted cycas plant had shrivelled and was dying. I put it down to the hear wave we were having. When the condition persisted even after the rains and the leaves looked "eaten" I scrutinized clearly to find one...then, an infestation. Surprisingly different species of ants were running all over the caterpillars. You can see the ants in the first photo.
