Yellow Perch

Perca flavescens

Description:

Yellow perch size can vary greatly between bodies of water, but adults are usually 4 - 10 inches in length. The Yellow Perch is yellowish in color, with five to eight dark bars going from its back almost to its belly. Its fins are olive colored, except for its pelvic (chest) fins, which are orange or red. Adult perch dine primarily on immature insects, larger invertebrates, (crayfish, etc.) and the eggs and young of other fish, which they take both from open water and from the bottom. Male perch reach sexual maturity at about three years of age, females at four. Perch spawn in the spring, laying eggs in gelatinous strings over dense vegetation, roots, and fallen trees in the shallows. These spawning grounds provide some of the best perch fishing available.

Habitat:

This fish lives in ponds, lakes, and streams. They need water with lots of vegetation.
