Big leaf maple burl

Acer macrophyllum

Description:

Bulbous trunk growth on a maple with large leaves.

Habitat:

In the rain shadow of the island.

Notes:

This big leaf maple had the largest burl surrounding its trunk that I've ever seen in that species.

I should add that much smaller burls are fairly common within a mile of this tree, also on bigleaf maple; apparently they're caused by (??) insects or mold.

I have no idea why this tree would have such a burl; none of the others in the neighborhood do. It really reminded me of the "Whomping Willow" in the Harry Potter books!
