Differential Grasshopper

Melanoplus differentialis

Description:

The larger of the two grasshoppers is a Differential Grasshopper. Note the distinctive herringbone pattern on the rear legs. Huntley Meadows Park is the extreme eastern portion of its range in Virginia. Their color can be bright green, bright yellow, olive green and many shades in between those colors. This one was a somewhat unimpressive brown.

Notes:

The smaller of the two grasshoppers may be an Atlantic Grasshopper. (?)
