In NZ called Morepork, in Australia called Southern Boobook. Several races occur. Smaller heavily marked brown owl. Commonly know for being quite vocal for which its local names are known.
Just about anywhere on NZ main Islands. Light forest/scrub, parks and gardens.
Found due to noise of mobbing blackbirds behind my farm shed.
