These one's actually a go through metamorphosis underground, which I would imagine would greatly increase their natural range. I've heard the Mourning Cloak butterflies hibernate winters. Whether they are able to this far north I'm not sure.

I would imagine that may be quite true. I can't imagine any moths surviving these cold temps that we get up here.

Thanks beaker! I read that in the Northern reaches of their boundaries they actually immigrate every year because they can't survive the winter.
