Kite Spider

Gasteracantha sanguinolenta

Description:

Colourful spider with horn-like structures on its back. The appearance is somewhat crab-like if you look at its abdomen. The spinneret can easily be seen in the middle of the abdomen as a black circle-like structure.

Habitat:

There is not much information available about Gasteracantha species yet. We found this spider along with other Gasteracantha species in a corn field. The web was weaved approximately 1 meter above the ground.

Notes:

There is more information available about the Gasteracantha cancriformis species. Even though it has only been found in different parts of the world (the American continent), there might be similarities since both spiders are from the same genus. More information about Gasteracantha cancriformes can be found here: http://animaldiversity.org/accounts/Gast...

@FlameGriffon: Thank you! I wish I had some more green in the background, that would have enabled me to catch the web in the picture too, like in the picture of the spider's abdomen. Too bad I didn't think about it then :P
