American Black Duck x Mallard hybrid

Anas rubripes x Anas platyrhynchos

Description:

An American Black Duck x Mallard Duck hybrid at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

Habitat:

Saltmarsh, partially frozen.

Notes:

There was a flock of about 15 American Black Ducks a few hundred yards away from this guy, but he seemed to be on his own. They were all pure American Black Ducks, to the best of my knowledge.

Yeah, from what I've read they're pretty common but this was my first time seeing one. He was one of the only ducks out in a refuge that usually has thousands of birds in the water - it was very cold out.
