Athyrium filix-femina
The large, feathery fronds die back in fall, and just now the new leaves are coming out, unfurling fiddleheads. The leaves come from a central spot from the rhizome beneath the ground. They are doubly pinnate.
Mature coastal temperate rainforest of sitka spruce, western hemlock, Douglas fir, etc.
When given sun (such as when they come up in the middle of my garden), they get very big and their rhizomes stretch out as far as the crown width.
