Great Purple Haistreak

Atlides halesus

Description:

Lycaenid of about 5cm wingspan. Head and thorax are black with white spots and green eyes; abdomen is blue on top and orange on the underside; underside of wings is dark purplish/grey with red spots and green/blue at the rear tips; upper side of wings is iridescent blue.

Habitat:

Found in "El Cimatario" national park, just outside Querétaro in semi-arid region of central Mexico.
